I run a multimedia production center in a library in higher ed and see so many students that only know the very specific things they've learned to do with their specific devices. Beyond just that, they are either afraid or unwilling to try to understand how something works or develop greater understanding to be successful with something they've never tried. The notion of digital "native" and digital "immigrant" suggests an understanding in the "native" group that does not exist (I also find the terminology rather terrible). Some of the other articles from the list touch on some related ideas.

    • I think this issue is tied to the existing challenge of "Digital Fluency of Faculty is Too Low" but the other element that has to change is the belief that digital literacy is something "extra" (mentioned in the "Can't Wait" article). When I as a librarian have conversations with faculty it's a question of who should be teaching it, but they don't want it to be them, when it should be an ubiquitous part of learning. I personally see digital literacy as different than media literacy, but it's worth mentioning that "Student Media Literacy Levels are Inadequate" is already among the known challenges (I should have worked backward, most if what I can come up with is already on a list). - lindleyshedd lindleyshedd Feb 19, 2014

    TNS Global has done some research to see what consumers in the mainstream think about wearable technology, finding seventy-five percent of surveyed consumers were aware of at least one wearable device, but only nine percent were actually interested in using them. 55% of consumers think wearable technology is or will be too expensive and 24% don’t want any more devices than they already have, plus majority of respondents did not want to wear a device on their eye, preferring a device for their arm. Privacy is also a major concern.
